Seiko Luxe Watches PROSPEX ALPINIST SPECIAL EDITION SPB289

In 1959, Seiko built a watch for the yamaotoko, the “mountain men” of Japan who climbed its toughest peaks. That watch, the original Alpinist, became one of Seiko’s first true sports watches and the foundation of a legendary line. The Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB289 Special Edition reinterprets that 1959 original for today, pairing its vintage soul with modern performance.

The dial is the star. A deep, layered green evokes the hushed depths of a “mystic forest,” shifting from emerald to near-black as the light changes beneath the curved sapphire crystal. True to the original, the dial carries mountain-shaped markers at 12, 6, and 9, a direct tribute to the Alpinist’s mountaineering roots. Bold LumiBrite hands and markers and a date window keep it practical from trailhead to boardroom.

Inside is Seiko’s in-house Caliber 6R35, a 24-jewel automatic movement with approximately 70 hours of power reserve and manual winding. You can watch it work through the screw-down see-through caseback. The stainless steel case and screw-down caseback deliver 200 meters of water resistance, unusual in a watch this refined.

At 38mm in diameter, 12.9mm thick, and 46.2mm lug-to-lug, the SPB289 wears with the compact, vintage-correct proportions enthusiasts prize. It fits slimmer wrists as naturally as larger ones and slips easily under a cuff.

Two looks come in the box. The stainless steel bracelet has a tri-fold push-button clasp for everyday durability, and an additional brown cordovan leather strap gives it a classic, heritage feel. Together they make the SPB289 one of the most versatile watches in the Prospex line.
